Math Wizard turned in the most impressive performance of his career Sept. 21 when he made a five-wide move in the stretch, edged Mr. Money at the wire, and upset the $1 million Pennsylvania Derby (G1) at Parx Racing.
All but counted out of the running after a slow start from the break, Math Wizard rated well behind the rest of the field as Mr. Money took the early lead on the rail. Preakness Stakes (G1) winner War of Will pressed the leader early, followed by local hero Spun to Run.
It appeared as though Mr. Money would wire the field in the 1 1/8-mile dirt test, but the son of Goldencents could not hold off a late challenge from jockey Edgard Zayas and Math Wizard, who made a move off the far turn to get up at the wire in a final time of 1:50.40.
